Should I take off my mask when meeting someone for the first time through a dating service? With COVID going around, I feel like I should keep my mask on, but some people seem to think you should take it off at least during the first meeting. I’d appreciate your opinions.

Maezawa from the Corporate Planning Office here as well. > Some people say you should take it off at least during the first meeting. I think it’s better to take your mask off during the first meeting. You could just wear it while traveling there, couldn’t you? You can’t wear a mask while eating, and if things continue afterward, I assume you’d take it off once you’re inside the room anyway.

I’m Basil, a male member. I agree with Mac’s opinion. >In any case, people have different levels of awareness when it comes to preventing infection, and there’s no definitive right answer at this point. Since we’re meeting someone, I think it’s important to respect their stance and not worry too much just because it differs from your own. >Besides, if you absolutely don’t want to get infected, you probably shouldn’t be going on dates in the first place. I also agree with what Rin and Jamu said: >If you’re planning to take things further, you can’t really worry about that sort of thing. >Considering that you might have dinner together and then continue on afterward, being overly particular about masks doesn’t make much sense. Personally, I handle things flexibly depending on my date and the situation.

I’m a female member, Rin. Regardless of whether masks are effective or not, given the current social climate, I think wearing one in public places or crowded areas can help both parties feel more at ease. However, since this is someone you’ve reached out to and are meeting for a date, I think it’s best to remove your mask when greeting each other. After that, as Mac has said, I think it depends on the choice of venue and the situation. If you’re planning to take things further, you can’t really worry about that anymore.

I’m a male member, Paper Airplane. I think most people will be wearing masks when they go out. Wearing one at the moment you meet will probably make the other person feel more at ease, too. Since 3D masks can be folded up, you won’t have to worry about where to put them during a meal, so I recommend them over regular masks. P.S. When both of you are wearing masks while walking around downtown, it’s actually kind of nice. I used to feel embarrassed walking around with a younger girl, but with masks on, I don’t have to feel self-conscious. I’ll probably keep using masks to hide my face even after COVID is over. Also, women should definitely come wearing a mask. Otherwise, it could be like, “Oh no, I forgot to wear one…” and people might figure out what kind of close-contact work you do without a mask… Normal girls tend to be extremely cautious about COVID, after all.
