I’m the person who called the question box, the interview venue, and even the Tokyo head office to confirm the answer to this question. The reason was that I felt terribly sorry for the person who asked the question, and I was deeply impressed by Maezawa-san’s response: it stood up for women and combined kindness, sound male reasoning, and a solution. My question was quite simple: “In a case like this, may we take Maezawa-san’s response as the official response from Universe Club?” By the way, I passed the photo-based preliminary screening on Wednesday, June 17, and was scheduled for an interview in Shinsaibashi. I’m a former DTL (I haven’t mentioned that I used to be a DTL, though most of you probably don’t know what that means anyway lol. Yes, I’m in my late 30s.) This is where things became difficult. First, I contacted the anonymous question box twice and was told that the toll-free number was listed at the top. It wasn’t, so I had no choice but to contact the Shinsaibashi office. The man who answered said, “Oh, I haven’t read that.” As I tried to briefly explain the content—including, with apologies, the other respondents’ opinions as concisely as possible—he repeatedly interrupted me with: “So, what are you trying to say?” I was explaining the question to someone who didn’t even know what it was about… Then the call suddenly ended. I wondered whether I had somehow hung up with my chin, but when I called back, the line was cut again. This is getting nowhere. I need to contact the Tokyo head office, where Maezawa-san is based. So I called them, only to find that the person who answered knew neither the question nor Maezawa-san’s response. Incidentally, when I asked the three people I spoke with for their names, they inexplicably panicked and abruptly hung up. They didn’t answer when I called back afterward, either. When I repeatedly consulted Murakami-san, a kind woman, via LINE and email about my interview, she introduced herself without being asked and told me to feel free to contact her anytime. She was the very embodiment of kindness and professionalism. I called to confirm things so I could protect myself, yet the person at the Shinsaibashi office said, “You’re the one scheduled for an interview at 1 p.m. on June 17, right? Hm.” Even though I gave them my full legal name, they wouldn’t identify themselves, gave no explanation, and simply hung up. That was tantamount to telling me not to come to the interview. I truly feel sorry toward Murakami-san. And to Representative Kida: “Someday, I’ll make Universe Club a company whose employees are proud to work there!” That noble vision shouldn’t remain a distant dream or illusion. At the very least, could you please ask the people answering the phones to give their club names? Well, this has become quite long. Thank you very much.

Maezawa from the Corporate Planning Office will answer as well. Even when an answer in the Q&A box is provided by an employee, it is not an official company response. Basically, it reflects that individual’s personal opinion. Of course, even though it’s a personal response, we answer based on what we ourselves would do, so I don’t think it differs all that much from the views of other staff members. Still, an official response would likely require approval from several people internally before we could provide it. By the way, since you’re planning to come in for an interview, I think there’s a good chance you’ll be rejected if things remain as they are. It’s almost as if you’re starting the interview with points already deducted. So on the day, I’d like you to focus on making up for those lost points. Don’t bring up the Q&A box yourself. Even if a staff member brings it up, it would be best to say something like, “I’m sorry—I was upset and overreacted at the time,” and act as though nothing happened. First, please remember why you wanted to register in the first place. To achieve that, you need to get registered, make a good impression on the staff, and have them think, “I’d like to introduce a man to this woman.” That’s what matters. For now, try to overlook everything else. It seems better to say what you want to say after you’ve met a good man and achieved your goal to some extent.

Female member Rin here. DTL? First, you need to learn how to write in a way that readers can understand. Otherwise, I have no idea what you’re trying to say. All it leaves behind is a creepy impression. Having not even a shred of charm as a person puts you at a disadvantage, regardless of your gender.

There’s no way the club would issue an official statement and have its staff share it every time something comes up in a Q&A like this. We don’t even know whether it’s true. Unless Maezawa-san specifically said that his comment represented the club’s official position, I’d take it as nothing more than his personal opinion. > At the very least, could you ask the person answering the phone to identify themselves by their club name?
