A papa (a male supporter) I’m seeing invited me to an online date. Offers have decreased quite a bit because of COVID, so I’m unsure what to do. I assume we’d just enjoy a meal and drinks while chatting over video, though… What’s the going rate for online dates?

I’m Joe, a columnist. First, I want you to understand that there’s no fixed going rate. Also, Flag Maker’s point is extremely important: basically, the man has no intention of paying. In other words, it’s zero. Please keep firmly in mind that no matter how much you multiply zero by, it’s still zero. That said, I’m sure you wouldn’t be satisfied simply keeping him company out of some spirit of volunteerism. That’s why the real test of your skill is figuring out how to get him to pay. At this stage, as long as you’re still talking about “the going rate,” you probably won’t get the outcome you want. Let me repeat this: the man has no intention of paying! It’s up to you to loosen his purse strings and create the going rate! I won’t say too much, since I’d risk upsetting the other male members and only make things harder for myself, but why not give it a try without overthinking it? In the process, try making things just a little sexier. Your outfit is important, and a hint of skin can be highly effective. Men are basically simple and stupid, after all.

I’m Meg, a female member. If I remember correctly, Universe’s online dates used to pay ¥5,000 in Amazon gift cards for the first 30 minutes. → My apologies—I see they’re paid in cash now. That said, I agree with Paper Airplane. If you’re already seeing someone, I found myself wondering, “Why???” The fact that you’re asking this question means you don’t really want to do online dates in the first place, right? However, if you approach it as a business, it ultimately comes down to how well you can entertain your partner through conversation. Whether you try your best or look for someone else is up to you.

I’m Flagmaker, a columnist. Apparently, the number of cam girls has increased because of COVID, so I don’t see why you shouldn’t receive an allowance for an online date as well. Most likely, the man won’t be planning to pay, so I think it’s best to ask before the online date. I looked it up, and one-on-one sessions seem to cost around ¥200 per minute—about ¥6,000 for 30 minutes.

I’m a confused man in my 60s. Is your papa asking you to have online dates? He sounds like quite a demanding papa, but if you’re registered as Type A, I can understand it to some extent… lol I’m seeing a college student as a Type A arrangement. Naturally, we can’t meet, and she’s also lost her part-time job, so I’ve been sending her more than her monthly allowance without her asking. Of course, I keep our LINE messages to a minimum so I don’t put any pressure on her.

Maezawa from the Planning Department here as well. I believe online dates after the second meeting are a format we haven’t really seen before. Also, with dating clubs, I think many people preferred to meet in person, so I don’t have much information on that kind of situation. Normally, when you don’t meet in person, it seems more common for no allowance to be paid. So before having an online date, I think you should reconfirm whether this is a monthly arrangement. If it is, you might want to explain that you’d like to receive the usual monthly support—or rather, that you’re having a difficult time and would appreciate some assistance—even during the period when you can’t meet. However, saying it too directly will often make men lose interest, so you have to phrase it indirectly, which can be quite difficult. That said, if this is someone you’ve had a good relationship with up to now, it might be a good idea to continue talking over video calls while considering your future relationship. The important thing is whether the other person is a good person and whether you want to continue seeing them. If they’re not someone you particularly care about, I think it would be fine to directly tell them that you’d like some assistance—and if that doesn’t work, end the relationship. P.S. > Universe’s online dates are, I believe, ¥5,000 worth of Amazon gift cards for the first 30 minutes, right? That was the case initially, but many people asked whether it could be paid in cash instead, so it was changed to ¥5,000 in cash paid to the woman.

I’m Marika, a female member. I think you’re a wonderful couple for properly avoiding going out and unnecessary contact. That alone is several times more meaningful than meeting in person. Zoom dates can be fun in their own way, since you may have more interesting conversations and discoveries than when you meet face-to-face. But for women who always meet purely for the allowance, they may simply feel like a tedious hassle. You need to secure some time and a place where you can be alone, tidy up the room that will be in the background, put on makeup, and maybe wear a cute lounge outfit. Even that takes quite a bit of effort. I think men should take those things into consideration and send the woman an allowance via electronic money or something similar—not necessarily the same amount as usual, but enough that she won’t think, “Ugh, what a hassle.” Men who say they’d be put off if the woman asked for it are precisely the ones I wish would offer it themselves. I don’t know the going rate, since I have no idea how much you receive when meeting in person, but realistically, it may be difficult to receive more than you would for a dinner date.

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member. I’d suggest repeatedly saying nothing but, “I want to see you,” until she eventually asks, “Would it be okay if I make it up to you when we meet?” Even 20 minutes online can feel pretty tiring… I can understand it if it’s an offer, but when you’re already seeing each other, I really don’t see the point of meeting online. I think it’s better to meet, even if only for a short while.
