As you go on more dates, do you ever start going to regular izakayas or similar casual places? Around which date does that usually happen? If you become close, are women generally okay with having a meal at that kind of place?

I’m a BB7 male member. What matters to me is the clientele and the overall atmosphere. I don’t like places where couples are being overly touchy while talking crudely, young people are making a lot of noise, or office workers are complaining about work, so I avoid those kinds of restaurants. Even an ordinary izakaya could be fine if it has a good clientele, a relaxed atmosphere, and doesn’t smell like cigarettes.

I’m a male member based in Seattle. Everyone’s making it sound so fancy. I’ll happily go on dates at izakayas, conveyor-belt sushi restaurants, or even Saizeriya. Some of the people I’m still seeing prefer those kinds of places, and I’m also pretty easygoing when it comes to food—I enjoy just about anything. I’m not good with cigarette smoke, so izakayas are fine as long as we can get a private room. For a first date, though, I usually choose a hotel.

I’m Meg, a female member. I’m voting for U.S.T. > Who you’re having a meal with matters more than where you’re eating. So I don’t worry about things like which date it is. That said, if someone takes me to an izakaya because they want to drink, even though my profile clearly says I can’t drink alcohol, I’d seriously question their judgment. Going out to eat somewhere every time is fine, but I also think it would be nice to bring a homemade lunch sometimes (*^^*) BB7 > The clientele and atmosphere Ah, yes, that’s important too! ♪

Maezawa from the Corporate Planning Office here as well. I’ve seen feedback from first dates saying things like, “I didn’t like being taken to an izakaya.” Until you’ve really gotten to know each other and they say, “I don’t care where we go—being together is what makes me happy,” it may be safest to avoid izakayas.

I’m Flag Maker, a column writer. I don’t go to ordinary izakayas because they’re cheap. I go because we have the kind of relationship where it’s perfectly comfortable to go to an ordinary izakaya together. Even there, though, food and drinks usually come to around ¥4,000–¥5,000 per person, so I actually find the value pretty poor. In Tokyo, there are plenty of delicious restaurants suitable for a date for ¥5,000–¥6,000 per person, even if they don’t have private rooms. Those are the main places I choose for dates. It makes me happy when I can introduce a place and the woman says, “I’d love to come here with my friends too!” For that reason, lately I’ve found it easier to spend time with women closer to my age, since neither of us has to be overly mindful around the other. Discovering these kinds of restaurants is one of my hobbies, so I make good use of the opportunities to meet people through the club. Honestly, the only time I book a place just because it has a private room—despite not really wanting to go there—is for a first date. Otherwise, I tend to end up going to the same places, so they probably think it’s some kind of interview…

I’m Marika, a female member. He always treats me very well, but I’m usually the one who makes the restaurant reservations. The place we went to the other day was more expensive than I expected (though still cheaper than a full-price Premium Class ticket from Haneda to Fukuoka). He didn’t say anything, but I’ve been feeling a little bad about it. So next time, I’m thinking of finding and suggesting somewhere affordable but delicious. If you know any places like that, I’d love to hear your recommendations! P.S. I think it’s nice to have both casual spots, like izakayas or set-meal restaurants, and more upscale places to choose from depending on the date and the mood. What I dislike most is when someone takes you to a fancy restaurant only at the beginning, then never takes you anywhere like that again. It’s disappointing when they stop putting in the effort after they’ve reeled you in.

I’m Hikōki, a male member. Not exactly “If you feel sorry for me, give me money,” but I can’t help feeling like they’re secretly screaming, “If you want to eat an extravagant meal, give me that money instead.” So we always decide what to eat based on how we’re both feeling that day after we meet. At the club, even for a first date, I don’t reserve some high-end “showcase” restaurant—I let the woman choose where she wants to eat. I try to focus on getting to know each other, without using food as bait or letting the meal distract us. I don’t smoke, so I don’t go to izakayas, but we often end up casually choosing something like a yakitori place, a Japanese restaurant, a sushi restaurant, or a set-meal place. So I may have only ever gone to more inexpensive, down-to-earth places with club girls—cheaper than izakayas, even. P.S. If you casually give her the meal money upfront, she’s usually in a great mood. Sometimes the actual meal she chooses costs only one-hundredth of that amount, so she gets to keep the rest and is even happier.

I’m Basil, a male member. Since starting papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), I’ve done the room-to-dinner kind of arrangement fewer than five times, and only when it got late at night. They were college students and other young women, so perhaps they felt more comfortable with a regular restaurant than somewhere upscale. They ate plenty without seeming bothered. I think it depends on the person and how often you meet.
