In the questioner’s case, if the relevant jurisdictions are different—and the farther apart they are—the less likely it is to cause trouble. If the amount is only around the level of an allowance, you may well be almost entirely in the clear. Unless you’re a celebrity like Mr. Tokui, it’s not easy for these things to come to light. The fact that even Mr. Tokui wasn’t flagged for several years shows that, for an ordinary person, it could take decades—or even go unnoticed through a change of generations. P.S. Rather than being traced and exposed through the woman’s tax filing, I think it’s more likely that, as Mac pointed out, some irregularity in your own filing will be discovered and bring the tax office to you. If it’s the tax office with jurisdiction over you, they’ll come looking for discrepancies whether it’s ¥1 million, ¥500,000, or even a few hundred thousand yen. If it’s outside their jurisdiction, they generally won’t act unless they have fairly solid evidence.
