The profile you fill out during the interview includes questions about whether you have any large scars or tattoos.
If you write, “A small tattoo on the top of my foot,” the staff member will probably ask, “Could you show me?” and check it visually. The conversation will likely go something like this:
“Oh, it’s small. Men hardly ever mind something this minor, but I’ll make a brief note of it in your profile, just in case.”
As for whether it actually increases or decreases the number of offers, I think it makes “almost no difference.”
So why include it in the profile?
I personally think tattoos behind the ear, navel piercings, and small tattoos on the top of the foot are basically like beauty marks. However, I get the impression that many people in their 60s and older are uncomfortable with them.
Some men absolutely will not accept a woman with any tattoo, no matter how small. Arranging meetings with those men would make everyone unhappy, so we include the information to avoid that.
It does seem a little strange that someone would mind a small tattoo but not a woman who has had extensive cosmetic surgery.
Five years ago, tattoos were much more strongly associated with yakuza wives, but nowadays that view is held by only a small minority. I think that in three years, no one will care anymore.
By the way, I try to imagine what kind of person a woman is from the way she phrases her question, and you seem like you’re probably beautiful.
