Tips Dec 5, 2019 16:21

I promised to spend New Year’s Eve, December 31, through New Year’s Day, January 1, together, but I’ve changed my mind and would rather spend it with my family. What would be the least awkward way to cancel? I’m worried he’ll ask, “Why are you saying this now?” if I tell him directly. At the same time, I don’t think canceling at the last minute by claiming I’m sick would be right either...

I’m Joe, a column writer. Instead of taking the time to ask, you should contact him right away. I can at least understand and sympathize with changing your mind—people are only human—but I really can’t understand why you’d ask for a safe or neutral way to phrase it. This may be a somewhat harsh opinion, but I hope you’ll understand where I’m coming from.

I’m だて◎ゆめ, a male member. Whether you tell the truth or say you were told to come home, I think either is fine. You’re both adults, so I don’t think anyone will make an issue of it.

Maezawa from the Corporate Planning Office here as well. > What would be the safest way to turn him down? I think you should simply tell him how you feel right away. I’m sure he also knows that you’re someone whose feelings can waver. If you explain that, he’ll probably accept it without making a fuss. That said, the fact that he wants to spend New Year’s with you suggests he’s quite taken with you, and he may even have made preparations. I think it’s fine to turn him down, but if you spend the time together, your feelings might change again. I’d just ask that you not cancel at the last minute by claiming to be ill or something—it would be pretty harsh.
