For example, we may not agree on the allowance amount. (They offer 30,000 yen or less, while I’d like to receive a little more, so we can’t reach an agreement and end up going our separate ways.) I mean it as a thoughtful gesture, but do men feel put off because bringing a gift makes me seem too professional? I’d love to hear your opinions, and I’d also like to know whether other women bring gifts too.

If that’s the case, rather than worrying about the cause, I think it would be better not to take things there. Even if you figure out the cause, it often won’t be something you can improve right away, and you can’t really tell what the cause is from words alone. I do think it would be better to understand the cause, though...
