I’m a female member, and I have my first date next week... The gentleman is coming from far away. I’m torn between giving him some local sweets or a slightly stylish handkerchief. Since something like a handkerchief can be a matter of taste, should I avoid it? I’ve never given a man a present before, so I’m nervous. I’d appreciate any advice.

Maezawa from the Corporate Planning Office here. For a first meeting, I think sweets would be better. Once you’ve started seeing each other, though, a handkerchief might be more appropriate. (By then, you’ll probably know their preferences, so it might be something other than a handkerchief.)

I’m a BB7 male member. I’ve been given sweets as gifts at the first meeting twice. Both women were genuinely kind and had great personalities. I feel like something that gets eaten and is gone right away suits this kind of relationship. Things you wear or keepsakes feel a little emotionally heavy to me, whether they’re given at the first meeting or later on...

I’m a male member based in Seattle. Personally, I prefer someone without cosmetic work. Everyone has their own preferences. More importantly, I enjoy spending time with someone who smiles and talks a lot. The best gift I’ve ever received was when a woman offered me her hand for a handshake as we said goodbye. We’re still close to this day.

I’m Saito, a column writer ♪ A small box of sweets would be perfect. I recommend waiting until you’ve gotten closer before giving anything lasting.

I’m a male member of UC and a member of the new salon. Since it’s your first meeting, I think snacks would be better than a handkerchief. As momo mentioned, if he’s married, he might not know what to do with a handkerchief. Also, since he’s coming from far away this time, I think he’d appreciate some local food or snacks. *Personally, I’d definitely love something local, haha.*

I’m Basil, a male member. Personally, I’d be happier with a handkerchief. The only gift I’ve ever received on a first meeting was one, actually. Things didn’t work out with her in the end, unfortunately, but it had a simple, elegant design, so I still use it regularly. If you grow close, it can also become a meaningful keepsake. I wouldn’t recommend sweets, since everyone has different tastes. Even if you give them some, they may not eat them, so it’s probably best not to ask for their thoughts afterward.
