That said, most men do report their actual occupations, so I think it’s best to assume that only a small minority may be lying.

You may be right, but keeping up a lie over a long period of time can be quite a hassle. In my case, I tell them my general line of work (...something related). In those cases, they may list whichever industry best represents what they do.
