The person asking the question may simply be straightforward and somewhat naïve.
These days, there are all kinds of universities, and admissions are no longer based solely on academic ability, as they were decades ago. There are special talent admissions, recommendation-based admissions, and many other pathways.
As for the financial situation of today’s university students, there’s a gap between their generation and the questioner’s generation due to cuts in government funding for universities and the increasing financial hardship faced by parents. With the idea that beneficiaries should bear the cost, taking out student loans has become the norm.
For the questioner’s generation, I believe strict attendance requirements were limited to universities with lower entrance standards. These days, however, even prestigious universities seem to enforce attendance strictly.
I was also ignorant about this until I became interested and looked into it through my own papa-katsu activities.
You can view this as an individual issue, but I think it’s also worth considering the circumstances behind it. Saying “young people these days…” is, in my opinion, an intellectual cop-out.
That said, I don’t know whether she genuinely lacks money or simply wants more of it. And since money has no color, if she wanted to explain it in a way that’s easy to understand, she may simply be using that as a convenient way of saying, “I need money every month.”
If someone asked you why you do papa-katsu, would you give them a detailed explanation? Wouldn’t you also gloss over it by giving them some simple, easy-to-understand reason?
I think they took out a loan they could repay if they really put their mind to it. Otherwise, it would be difficult to pass the loan screening in the first place.
So when they say they “can’t repay it,” I think it’s best to understand that as meaning something like, “I have less money left over for going out because I have to make repayments.”
A host’s tabs are extended on the assumption that the debt can be collected because the person already works in the adult entertainment industry—or could be pushed into it if necessary. Legitimate lenders don’t lend based on those kinds of criteria. So while they may be similar in the broad sense that both involve lending money, that’s about as far as the similarity goes.
