Lately, scolding questioners in this anonymous question box has become my way of relieving stress, so thank you very much for volunteering as my latest victim!
This time, though, that’s a good question.
This is exactly the kind of question I’ve been waiting for.
・Male members’ hobbies
→ Gourmet food, golf, working out or jogging, scuba diving and other water sports, amateur baseball, theater, opera, classical concerts, driving, traveling, drinking, and so on.
Pretty ordinary, right?
I’ve never met anyone whose hobby was saving money, for example.
・Female members’ hobbies
→ Saving money, cooking, shopping, beauty, fortune-telling, spas, yoga, photography, visiting cafés, walking, drinking, lessons, dancing, movies, manga, games, reading, and so on.
Also pretty ordinary...
But honestly, I find myself wondering whether the truth is more like:
→ Binge eating and drinking, visiting adult entertainment venues, shutting themselves away at home, secretly taking photos, and so on.
・Are there any hobbies that would make you reject a man or woman?
→ Not particularly. However, we generally don’t tell female members much about the men’s hobbies.
For example, if a man writes on his profile, “I love movies and have seen every film by director Kurosawa,”
a lot of women will interpret that as:
“Oh no, if I go on a date with this guy, I’ll be trapped watching Kurosawa films all day and never make it home.”
Or:
“I enjoy traveling.”
→ “Oh no, if I date this guy, he’ll immediately take me to Vladivostok or North Korea.”
That’s ridiculous, I think—but perhaps there are men who really would do something like that.
So, sorry for shooting everything down, but when it comes to enjoying a hobby together, things can get difficult between men and women.
Take golf, for example.
The man thinks:
“I bought her a golf set and golf clothes, took her out for a full round from early in the morning, patiently taught her everything, treated her to some delicious beer and food, so surely I don’t need to give her an allowance afterward.”
Meanwhile, the woman thinks:
“I was dragged out of bed early, taken somewhere far away, forced to follow along with these incomprehensible rules, and now my back hurts, I’m sunburned, it’s full of middle-aged men, and I’ve been tied up for hours today—so I’d better get ¥100,000.”
I think those kinds of pointless negotiations are likely to happen.
When a woman says, “I like traveling,” she usually means, “I like traveling with my friends” or “I like traveling with my boyfriend”—unfortunately, not with some middle-aged man.
So no matter how luxurious a hotel you book, from her perspective, it can still end up feeling like a matter of how many hours she’s being tied up.
That said, I do think shared hobbies can be an effective bond for maintaining a long-term relationship after you’ve both become comfortable with each other. So finding someone who shares your interests is a good idea.

The male members often seem to enjoy golf, going for drives in their prized cars, and so on. Female members may be more likely to enjoy shopping—though there probably aren’t many who dislike it.
Looking at both male and female members, movies, music, and reading are also fairly common interests. Of course, preferences vary widely: some like action movies, horror, K-pop, classical music, modern literature, self-help books, light novels, and so on.
To put it bluntly, people may not be very eager to talk about more niche hobbies.
That said, wouldn’t it be a little boring if someone revealed absolutely everything about themselves from the very beginning? Discovering new sides of each other as the relationship deepens can be part of the fun too!
It would be wonderful to meet someone of the opposite sex who shares your interests and can enjoy them with you.
