Are there women with what you might call “otaku” interests?

This content is machine-translated.
There’s even a question in the Questions section along the lines of, “You should give women golf lessons!”... I imagine many of the men registered here have refined, gentlemanly hobbies such as golf, going to the theater, and fine dining... So I wonder whether a hardcore otaku like me—someone who thinks, “Women in the real world are great, but women in the 2D world are the best too!”—is a rarity. Personally, I’d be happy to meet a woman I could go on dates with to anime shops and places like that. Respondent: “Then go to an otaku-focused matchmaking site!” No, no, wait—just hear me out for a moment! These days, every field is trying to attract the “otaku” demographic. For example... ・Young people are losing interest in horse racing! → Make an anime featuring moe characters based on horse racing ・Young people are disappearing from rural areas → Revitalize towns through anime Otaku-only matchmaking parties also seem to be quite popular. ...Exactly. Dating clubs have no choice but to embrace the otaku demographic too, right? After all, even the famous Kano Sisters have recently been putting anime-character cosplay front and center! So please start by creating Universe Club’s own mascot character, “Universe-chan,” and making her the guide!! ...Sorry, I’m joking. But seriously... ・Many otaku men are wealthy → In fact, many men who use this club spend more on their hobbies every month than they pay women. There are still plenty of men who look like the stereotypical otaku from *Densha Otoko*, but there are also many stylish, gentlemanly men. If this demographic could be successfully drawn into the real world... ・There are also many otaku women who are plain and uninterested in fashion, especially among women who enjoy cosplay. But there are also many women who care about fashion and beauty, and who shine both through their otaku interests and in other areas. If they can clearly separate their hobbies from the time they spend meeting men, I imagine many of them would receive plenty of offers on this site. 【Summary of my questions】 ・How many women with otaku interests are there? Is this something people even ask about or confirm in the first place? ・Are there terms such as, “Women who like BL (a genre dealing with romance between men) are not acceptable,” for example? →Of course, prioritizing doujinshi events over men, or talking about nothing but those interests even when with men, might be considered unacceptable... ・Are there also men here with otaku interests? Sorry for yet another rather niche topic. I’d really appreciate your answers. For the record, I understand that hobbies are only one aspect of a woman. And although I’m a very hardcore otaku, I’m not the sort of person who would show up to meet a woman wearing an anime-character T-shirt—apparently there are quite a few men like that on matchmaking sites.

I was going to have Kida answer this, but it’s too creepy, so I’ll pass. I searched “otaku” on the members-only site, and 60 women came up. So there are probably around 60 women who are into otaku culture. I hope you find someone great.

Yoshida from Universe Chiba here—someone who loves both real-life and fictional characters—so let me jump in with an answer. Since we have the opportunity, I’ll focus specifically on the “question roundup” put together by you, our hardcore otaku questioner! I think there are quite a lot of women with otaku hobbies! They probably just don’t come out about it—or can’t—during their interviews. We don’t specifically ask about it, either. That said, Yoshida never misses a woman who comes to her interview carrying an Animate shopping bag! “I cosplay.” “I spent 100,000 yen on a mobile game trying to get my favorite character.” “I bought a dummy-head microphone the other day.” I’ve heard stories like these, too. I’ve also heard from male members after their dates: “The woman I met kept talking about Love Live!” There are lots of closet otaku. Liking BL isn’t a disqualifier, either. If women who dislike gay men were unacceptable, then no one would be eligible to register! If you’re a hardcore otaku, wouldn’t you prioritize a doujinshi event over a date with a man? Wouldn’t you prioritize it too, dear questioner?! Actually, why not have a Comic Market date in summer or winter? Please prepare plenty of Soseki rather than Yukichi. Some of our male members have otaku hobbies as well. So please don’t worry.

Aizawa from Universe Tokyo here. There may not be a huge number of them, but yes, we do have women with otaku interests!! One of the women I interviewed actually told me, “I love manga and anime. Pop stuff is great, but I also enjoy darker stories like Code Geass!!” Even now, when I look through the interests section, I see women who love anime, as well as women who say they love it so much that they cosplay. I suspect there may also be some closet otaku who hide their interests because they think it could work against them during the interview. Personally, I like Universe-chan and would love to try it myself. As someone nicknamed Bayma◯x of Universe Tokyo, I’d even love to hold a mascot character contest!! Sorry for getting off track... In conclusion, we do have otaku girls registering with us!! We don’t reject anyone based on their hobbies, so please rest assured.
