As I read this question, I felt that the answer might depend on what exactly makes the conversation painful.
1) It’s painful because you don’t want to listen for that long and it’s taking up too much time.
2) It’s painful because you want to join the conversation too, but he talks one-sidedly, or because he’s discussing things at a level you can’t participate in. (When you can’t join in, the conversation feels longer.)
In case 1), as everyone has said, try to signal through your body language that you want to wrap things up quickly—or end the relationship altogether.
In case 2), when the conversation is about something you don’t know much about, I think it’s best to either steer it toward a topic you can talk about, or dig deeper into a specific part of the subject that interests you.
If your papa is the type who enjoys talking, asking lots of questions probably won’t leave a bad impression. Once you figure out what topics he’s into, you could also do a little research beforehand.
It does take some mental effort, but once you get used to doing this, long conversations stop feeling painful at all. If anything, the conversation may go on longer, but both of you are more likely to feel satisfied, right? Haha.
That’s just my personal opinion, though.
