I’m in an adult relationship (intimate) with a married woman I met through this club. If her spouse finds out about the relationship and demands compensation, am I legally obligated to pay?

You may be obligated to make a payment.

It’s not that you’re obligated to pay simply because you received a demand for payment. Rather, the situation is that you’re likely to be ordered to pay if the matter goes to court, so if the outcome would be the same after fighting it out, you might as well pay. That said, you do need to determine whether the amount being claimed is reasonable. If you can’t judge that yourself, I recommend paying a lawyer for a consultation. If the amount is reasonable, it would probably be better to pay it rather than go to court only to lose. However, if you genuinely had no way of knowing she was married and weren’t negligent in that regard, you might not necessarily lose in court. So, one option may be to establish that you didn’t know, without any negligence on your part. Simply saying you didn’t know because you never asked won’t be enough, though.

If you think about it normally, you’d expect them to demand an outrageous amount. Why did you think you wouldn’t have to pay? You’re in your 60s, too… really.

It’s not entirely out of the question, but I think the chances are low unless that was your intention from the start. You should probably proceed while keeping an eye on how the relationship develops. The legal fees would probably end up costing more. Besides, you’d have to explain all sorts of things to the lawyers and judge, which would be embarrassing.

It probably depends on the circumstances, but I’m not particularly familiar with the laws surrounding this kind of relationship. There are plenty of wonderful women out there, so I wouldn’t go out of my way to offer an arrangement to a married woman and take on that kind of risk.

Receiving a demand for payment does not automatically mean you are legally obligated to pay. When you receive one, it would be best to consult a lawyer first.
