As a relationship goes on, do you start using your phone during meals? We’ve been seeing each other for over a year and things are going well, but recently my partner has started checking their phone frequently while we eat. They’re still young, so I’m trying to take it in a positive way—as a sign that they feel comfortable enough not to be so formal around me. What are things like for everyone else?

I’ve never seen anyone checking their phone during a meal. I often see them fiddling with their phone while I’m in the shower, though. If your partner is doing it, why not check your own phone too? If she finds that unpleasant, she might reflect on her own behavior.

I guess we only reach for our phones during a meal when we’re looking something up related to what we’re talking about. When that happens, we’re both absorbed in our phones. Usually, the woman finds what we’re looking for first, and I lean over to take a look at her screen. Young people are so quick with their phones—it’s impressive (lol). We’ve been together for four years, and it seems she has a network through her workplace, so she checks her phone from time to time, but not very often.

Back when my wife didn’t have a smartphone, she used to get furious at me and the kids for using our phones during meals… Once she got a smartphone, she bought and started using a stand to place it on during meals. Even when we eat out as a family, she no longer gets angry at us for “doing nothing but touching our phones.” Girls who are used to papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) sometimes don’t touch their phones at all. They maintain eye contact the whole time and speak politely using formal language. Those girls also see you off properly, and the moment you’re out of sight, you get a perfectly worded thank-you message. Everything about them is almost too perfect. Once you become comfortable with each other, you might look for places to go together, research things you can do and show each other what you find, look up something that merely came up in conversation, search for somewhere to hang out, compare reviews—or, when hunting for Pokémon GO, look at the woman’s phone in the passenger seat from so close your faces almost touch. It was actually pretty fun. These days, smartphones are indispensable to everyday life, so people naturally use them whenever they need to—especially women in their early twenties or those who have never been married. They may ignore messages from their papa (a male supporter), but I’m sure they immediately keep in touch with their friends from their single days, even making plans for that very day. Hmm… does that mean a young woman who can go without looking at her phone the whole time prioritizes papa-katsu over hanging out with her female friends? Also, even when she’s using her phone like that, it’s kind of nice when she happily says, “Wow, it’s already this late?” or “Whoa, time flies!” after three or four hours have flown by.

Since we’re comfortable with each other, I don’t really worry about it. That said, I generally only use my phone to reply to work messages. I share work-related things with my papa, so I’ll be talking about something like, “This happened today…” while checking my phone. I naturally stopped messaging friends in front of my papa. Using your phone during a meal feels rude in the first place, so I feel like work messages are unavoidable, but I don’t use it for anything else. Maybe that girl has just let her guard down.

Basically, I don’t check my phone that often. That said, on rare occasions, both the women I meet and I may need to use our phones whenever an important message comes in, after letting the other person know first.

I’m always looking at my phone during meals too. She does as well, so we eat in silence while scrolling on our phones. Every now and then, if one of us finds an interesting news story or video, we show it to the other. It gives us something to talk about. After more than three years, we’re kind of like a married couple who only sees each other occasionally. I’m perfectly fine with that, though.

I’ll look at my phone if an emergency comes up and we both start frantically checking our phones, or when I’m looking something up online with my papa (a male supporter). That’s about it. You chose a young, beautiful woman, so if you can’t tolerate things like poor manners, frequently checking her phone, or her being curt and cold toward you, she won’t stay by your side.

Women around 20 tend to be on their phones a lot, while women in their late 20s and early 30s can no longer rely on youth as their main advantage. Instead, they develop good manners and gain a new kind of charm. As they approach their 40s, their desire tends to increase, and they become more experienced and captivating in an intimate relationship. In papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), you can’t get by on youth or looks alone. The world really is well-balanced, isn’t it? None of my monthly-arrangement partners are constantly on their phones. In fact, women like that tend to be careless in other ways too, so they naturally disappear from my life. That said, I do tell them at the beginning that it’s fine to check their phones. Even so, some of them never look at them at all. I don’t look at my phone either, of course. I wouldn’t date someone who makes me want to check my phone, so I suppose that says it all. That’s just based on my experience.

I think it also depends on the woman’s age. With younger women—around 18 to their early 20s—if they don’t respond right away, their friendships may suffer, so they may feel the need to check their phones even during a date. For women who are a little older—late 20s and up—their friends are usually around the same age, so friendships won’t necessarily suffer just because they don’t reply immediately. That may make it easier for them to be considerate of their date. If it bothers you, I think it would be best to gently let her know how you feel about her using her phone during dates.
