For me, it feels less like paying to go on a date and more like going on a date so I can give money to the woman. Perhaps my means and ends are different from the person asking the question, which makes it difficult to answer.
You can meet people anywhere, and there are countless beautiful women at lounges, so I no longer feel the need to use a dating club. However, since I owe them for introducing me to my “ace,” I’m thinking of keeping my membership.

You seem to be approaching relationships with women from a rather submissive position.
I do pay an allowance, but I’m also confident that I give them a great time through intimacy.
I make sure they enjoy themselves in other ways too, such as treating them to delicious sake or cake.
I think you should work on yourself to the point where even women who date other men for 80,000 yen or more still want to see you on a pay-per-meeting basis for 50,000 yen.
It’s probably a little different from women who simply lavish money on handsome men at host clubs.

I’m a middle-aged woman, but I don’t want to be fawned over badly enough to spend the money I worked so hard to earn on a host.
Likewise, I can’t understand people who spend tens of millions—or even millions—of yen at hostess clubs and then bask in their own sense of satisfaction.
Both are pretty one-sided, and the people on the receiving end don’t seem to take much of a risk.
As for the happy delusions of men involved in papa-katsu—hoping that something might happen, or thinking they really understand her—I think that depends on the woman’s skills.
Women are taking on considerable risks and paying a significant price, so I don’t feel the two situations can really be compared.

What I’m wondering is why you’re so curious about it in the first place. Unless your wife has gotten into hosts, is it just curiosity?
For one thing, middle-aged women going to host clubs was mostly a thing up until the 2000s—about 15 years ago. These days, the clientele is almost entirely female sex workers between 10 and 23. Even women around 25 are treated like “old ladies” and have no place there.
So “middle-aged women who like host clubs” are a minority to begin with, and rather unusual. There are nowhere near as many of them as there are women dating men, so perhaps the difference is simply that they aren’t an everyday sight.

At a host club, it’s similar to women at lounges or cabaret clubs showering someone with money in exchange for dates.
Dating clubs overlap with that in some ways, but they’re also a little different. Some people can’t keep working in places like that long-term.
Also, young women—mostly in their twenties—can become obsessed with hosts. Even unbelievably beautiful women can get hooked on them, so from a man’s perspective, it’s completely incomprehensible.
Women are smarter than men and tend to become more levelheaded as they get older, so only a very small number of them do something as foolish as lavishing money on a man.
Men, on the other hand, stay idiots no matter how old they get—or you could say they’re capable of remaining fools at any age.

The genders of the person giving the allowance and the person receiving it are different.
There are probably other differences as well, but if you could rephrase your question—including why you want to identify those differences—I might be able to give you a more useful answer.

I don’t know the first thing about host clubs, but I think it’d feel about the same as:

We can agree that finding true love isn’t easy.
Other than at the beginning, I guess the main difference is whether it’s mostly direct dealings or whether the agency gets involved.
The drama starring Nagisa Saito is really fun.
