My birthday is next month, but my papa doesn’t know yet. Would he be put off if I told him myself, since it might seem like I’m hinting for a gift? How can I casually let him know my birthday is coming up?

As you get closer, the conversation will naturally turn to things like, “I’m turning __ in __,” and you’ll end up learning each other’s birthdays. On the other hand, bringing up your birthday when you aren’t that close yet can feel unnatural, so it’s better not to. You could mention it shortly before your birthday by saying, “I can’t meet that day because it’s my birthday and my friends are taking me out to celebrate.” But what I recommend is casually bringing it up afterward, like, “I turned __! lol” That way, you won’t come across as calculated for telling him before your birthday—and if he’s thoughtful, he might even give you a birthday gift.

For example, if your next date happens to fall extremely close to your birthday—say, the day before or after—you could probably mention something like, “Actually, my birthday is the day before (or the day after).” But most men will probably think, “Is she hinting that she wants something?” Still, as long as you don’t actually say you want anything, it’s probably just within the safe zone, so I feel like it’s okay to mention it. Also, it seems fairly common to ask about the man’s birthday when you’re together. Some men, when asked, may absentmindedly ask the woman about hers in return, so you can bring it up naturally by simply answering when he asks. If he doesn’t ask, that probably means he isn’t someone you should tell, so I think it’s safest not to say anything until he does. That said, there are some strange men who check the members’ page every day to see when a woman’s age changes and figure out her birthday, so some may already know without you having to tell them...

When coordinating schedules, I might say something like, “Please avoid that day because my family or friends may be throwing me a birthday party, depending on how COVID is spreading.” Is that a little too calculated, too? But if you’re trying to hint at it in the first place, isn’t some level of calculated behavior unavoidable? Marika

Hmm, I wouldn’t mention it unless he asks. If you want him to know, how about saying during your date, “Oh! My birthday’s next month, so I just got a ¥2,000-off coupon~☆”? Is that too calculated? (´;ω;`)

Wouldn’t it be easier to share your own birthday after asking about your papa’s? Wouldn’t that kind of conversation naturally lead to it? That’s what I thought, but maybe I’m wrong? Basically, do you just want to mention your own birthday so you can fish for something in return? lol If so, they might understandably dislike that. You can tell you don’t really like the other person and don’t mind if they’re put off, too lol. How empty. No, that’s not it either. It’s sad when you know their birthday, but they don’t know yours. If that’s the kind of person they are, there’s no point hoping for anything—better to give up early.

Like Airi, I check their birthday on LINE. That said, I only send a small Starbucks gift card through LINE Gifts for their birthday…

Kazu-san suggested it, but I usually check birthdays on LINE, so I think that would be a good option. Even if you haven’t checked beforehand, you’ll still find out on the day itself, when you may get an alert like, “It’s ○○’s birthday. Send them a gift.” (Though this may depend on your settings.) I think it depends on the other person’s personality and the nature of your current relationship, but I’m the type who likes giving presents, so I’d want to know.

When we’re discussing plans to meet next month, I might casually say something like, “Oh, my friend is taking me to [somewhere] for my birthday next month, and I’m really looking forward to it!” If he’s the kind of person who asks, “Oh, is it your birthday?” there’s a chance he might give me a present. But if he just lets it slide, should I assume there’s zero chance?

Whether he’d be bothered depends on the man and the nature of your relationship. If he feels that you usually treat him well, he might want to give you something for your birthday. If not, he may not appreciate it. As for subtly letting him know your birthday, why not list it on your LINE profile? Though I don’t check that section myself (lol).
