University tuition has gotten expensive, even at national universities.
I was shocked to learn that tuition at my alma mater, a regional national university, is now over ¥500,000 a year—nine times what it was when I attended.
In Japan, student loans accrue interest, and repayments start soon after graduation. I feel bad for students having to deal with that.

Your take isn’t wrong. You’re asking whether ¥1 million for six months of tuition is expensive, right?
Leaving out special cases like medical or nursing school, even ¥600,000 for a semester is fairly high, even for a private university. Kawasaki Medical University, which is said to be the most expensive in Japan, costs ¥7 million a year, I think.

As AwaAwa-san said, depending on the school or department, it can exceed one million yen.
