A good way to turn him down is to make yourself look like the bad guy.
Try telling him exactly what you wrote in your question. If he gets angry, that’s actually a good thing. And if he’s a reasonable papa (a male supporter), he may simply say, “Well, it can’t be helped.”
If you try too hard to spare his feelings, you might end up making things more complicated.
