Staff members say personality is also important when determining your rank (class), but can they really get a sense of who you are from an interview lasting about an hour and a few emails? I also question whether personality should be reflected in the ranking in the first place.

Maezawa here. There’s only so much you can learn in an hour—just a little, really. That said, even if someone puts on an act, there’s a limit to how long they can keep it up, so you can get a fairly good sense of them. Of course, you may be fooled by a woman who’s especially good at putting on a front. But if she also keeps up that act when she goes on dates with men, there won’t be any strange feedback afterward. To put it bluntly, if a woman seems like a genuinely nice person to a man, then even if she’s actually not, it’s probably fine to regard her as a nice woman. We’re not trying to assess her character as a human being—we’re trying to provide happy encounters. Naturally, no one can be fully understood in a short interview, so there will probably be times when you realize afterward that someone was a little different from what you expected. But men also understand that it’s impossible to know everything about someone in just an hour, and that there are limits. Even so, we do our best to make sure there aren’t any major discrepancies. For example, whether she straightens her shoes after taking them off, her mannerisms when sitting down, and how considerate she is during conversation. Some women are simply fun to talk to. It’s hard to say whether that comes down to personality, but if a woman can make conversation enjoyable just by being there, I think she may be worth placing in a higher class.
