With socks, there’s always a chance they won’t work with the color of his suit or clothes, or simply won’t suit his taste. So if it were me, I’d go with a handkerchief. I remember getting one as a gift when I was in high school.
Of course, I’d appreciate the thought. If I received one, I’d say “thank you” on the surface, too.
I know the person asking says not to answer “he doesn’t need a present,” but honestly, just as women judge their own worth by the money or gifts they receive, I’m afraid that getting a cheap present might suddenly make me think, “Ah…so that’s about how much I’m worth?” Maybe around 5% of the allowance? (lol)
Wouldn’t it be safer to do something like celebrate together—having a small cake or some chocolates in the room, for example—something that doesn’t directly put a value on you?

As Kazu pointed out, I’d feel a little awkward if someone sent me something I didn’t like.
Handmade gifts are especially a no-go.

I don’t need socks that aren’t to my taste.
And I don’t really need handkerchiefs either.
I don’t need either one, but if I had to choose, I’d go with two pairs of socks.
