Papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) gives me the impression of something students do, while being a mistress seems like something adults do. Calling an adult woman a papa-katsu girl also sounds kind of silly to me, so I’m wondering if it’s different from being a mistress.

I’m Taro, a male member. Isn’t it just a generational difference? For those born in the Showa era, “mistress” seems fitting, while for those born in the Heisei era, papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) seems fine. What they’re doing is pretty much the same, but the Showa version feels more damp somehow—like the smell when rain is just starting to fall.

Well, if I said I was doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), people would probably think I was stupid. “Keeping a mistress” feels more fitting to me than papa-katsu, too. Marika

I’m Aya, a female member. It feels a little strange when a fully grown working woman calls herself a “papa-katsu girl,” doesn’t it? The way I see it, papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) usually involves receiving money on a pay-per-meeting basis from relatively unspecified partners, while being a mistress is more of a stable, ongoing arrangement. I’m in that situation myself, and I think quite a few people transition from papa-katsu to a mistress relationship.

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member. The differences can range from minor to substantial. “Lover” could mean anything from a girlfriend of a married man to a mistress in a papa-katsu-style arrangement where an allowance is involved. Even in terms of the allowance, there can be a huge range—from zero to virtually unlimited. And in some cases, a mistress may receive a car, condo, or house in her own name even without receiving a regular allowance.

I’m Kazu, a male member. If that’s how you feel, then I think it’s fine to keep thinking that way. Also, “papa-katsu girls” and papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) aren’t the same thing. The former refers to women who engage in papa-katsu, while the latter refers to the activity itself. It depends on what you consider “adult,” but I also find it somewhat odd to call adult women “girls.” Since you seem to feel that the term sounds a little silly as well, why not try saying “women who do papa-katsu” instead?
