I’m a male member. I’m going on a first date with a Type D woman who seems to be receiving a flood of offers. Do you have any advice on how to make it an enjoyable date rather than just going through the motions?

Maezawa from the CEO’s office here, answering your question as well. If offers are pouring in, she’ll be dating all kinds of men, so you’ll probably be compared with the other prospective supporters. That means you need to show her something that sets you apart from the competition. For example, being fun to talk to seems important. You could also take her somewhere nicer to eat than the other men do. “Nicer” could mean more expensive, but I think a place with a good atmosphere is important too. Another option is to outdo the others with the allowance. Most men apparently find it psychologically difficult to offer more than ¥100,000, but you could ignore that and ask how much she wants, then offer twice that amount. If she asks for ¥70,000, that would mean ¥140,000, but I think her attitude would change completely. Here’s another, more unconventional strategy: When you’re giving her the ¥5,000–¥10,000 for dinner, of course you should hand it over as soon as you sit down. Then surprise her by putting ¥50,000 in the envelope, and after dinner, give her the amount she originally asked for—not double. Also, keep smiling throughout the meal. Smile whenever your eyes meet. I feel like things like that are important too. Men in particular can seem scary when they have a neutral expression. Even when they’re not angry, they can look angry. So whether your smile is strained or unnatural, just keep smiling. She may even appreciate the effort, and if you keep smiling the whole time, her opinion of you might improve. Try your best to keep smiling for four hours. A smile Fun conversation A good restaurant A generous (well-paying) allowance I feel like these four things should help you succeed.

“Flooded with offers!” What’s that—something delicious??? That’s the alternate reality I live in. I’m Meg, a Type D female member. I focus on how I can make the person in front of me enjoy themselves, so as long as it doesn’t turn into a one-sided conversation (or adult relationship), I’m good. If she cuddles up to me afterward, I consider it a success♪

I’m Paper Airplane, a male member. What matters is whether the questioner can convey her own appeal and originality—whether he feels a sense of connection, and whether she stands out from the others. So I think it’s best to briefly present yourself using the approaches that have worked best for you in the past—your winning formula. After that, give her space and calmly observe the conversations and actions she wants. Also, if she’s a D type, it probably comes down to your compatibility in bed, so I think it’s fine to decide what to do afterward based on that compatibility. For reference, I’ve never made an offer to a D type either.

I’m Flag Maker, a columnist. There’s no foolproof approach that works for every date, and when things are going to fail, they fail. Regardless of whether a date goes well, I approach a first date with the following process so that even a failure can help me on the next date and add to my experience: ① form a hypothesis, ② come up with a strategy, ③ put it into practice, and ④ review the results. With more information, you can form a better hypothesis and devise a better strategy, but it’s difficult when you don’t have enough to go on. Start by profiling her based on the information in her profile, then try to find points of empathy or common ground. However, saying something completely direct like, “I’m ○○, and you’re ○○ too, right?” cuts the effect in half. Even if you’re right, it can actually backfire, so think of a natural conversational storyline that eventually leads there. Another safe option is to make her laugh. That said, prompting a forced, polite laugh will backfire. If she says, “You’re so funny!” assume you’ve failed. My specialty is delivering ridiculously silly jokes with a completely straight face and a serious tone. For example, I might say that I’m so excited to eat the food that I agonize over which dish to start with and end up unable to eat anything. You can repeat that bit whenever another dish comes out. Just be careful, because it will fall completely flat with women who aren’t compatible with that style. That’s just one example that came to mind. She’s a D type, right? If your terms match, I think things will move smoothly toward an adult relationship (intimate). However, from a woman’s perspective, even if she puts effort into the date, her enthusiasm will drop if the terms don’t work out—and all the time she invested will have been wasted. So the question is: how can you make sure she’s in a good mood starting with the meal? You’ll probably give her transportation money at the beginning of the meal, but make it a five-figure amount in yen right from the start. I think that will lift her spirits and help her enjoy the date without worrying. When money can solve something, let the money do the work instead of doing it all yourself. That’s the strategy I’d consider for a D-type woman. However, I’ve never actually made an offer to a D type, nor have I tried this strategy myself, so sorry if it doesn’t work. ^^
