I’m Shingo Lee, a column writer. Looks are what initially spark my interest, so they’re the most important thing to me. But to keep things going, personality and values matter most.

I’m BB7. Looks alone aren’t enough to keep things going. Even if someone is incredibly attractive and exactly my type, it’s disappointing if our personalities don’t click or we’re not physically compatible. Surprisingly, that happened quite often.

I’m Fuu, a column writer. In papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), I make offers based not just on a woman’s face, but on her overall appearance, including her figure. Looks are the most important factor. That said, even if she’s attractive, there won’t be an ongoing arrangement if her personality or intimacy isn’t good, or if we’re simply not a match. I tend to shy away from extremely beautiful women or those who look like they have a harsh personality. I consider whether we’re a good match and choose someone who’s cute and seems kind.

I’m Nana Ayase ♡ First of all, I think looks are what get you an offer. They look at your face, check your profile and figure, and think, “I guess I’ll try making an offer.” But if you meet and your personality turns out to be bad, there won’t be a next time.

Hmm, I think it really depends on the person, but I do get offers even though I’m not exactly beautiful. Also, I should mention that I don’t show my face on my profile in the first place. That said, I’ve never had anyone turn around and walk away from a first meeting saying, “If that’s what you look like, I’m not interested.” So while some people may think looks are the most important thing, I get quite a few offers from people who don’t feel that way. And as for whether things continue, I’m certain looks aren’t the most important factor. Marika

Maezawa from the President’s Office here—I’ll answer as well. I wouldn’t say looks are the most important thing, but there’s no doubt they matter. The reason I don’t consider them number one is that while looks may lead to an offer, whether it develops into an ongoing arrangement afterward depends on personality. So, even if a woman is attractive but has a bad personality, she may receive plenty of offers at first, but she probably won’t be invited a second time or beyond. Eventually, she may stop receiving offers altogether. (This is also because we have more female members than male members.) Personality is important when it comes to maintaining an ongoing relationship. As with anything, I believe balance is important.

I’m not trying to deny that. It’s the same as men being judged by their money. In a dating club, it’s considered bad manners to say things like: “I chose you for your looks (and your boobs).” “I love what’s inside your thick wallet.” That said, as Marika pointed out, what matters more for maintaining a relationship is what’s on the inside. Please consider this very clumsy analogy: - To make it to the Olympics, looks are what matter. - To win a medal at the Olympics, what’s inside is what matters. Actually, I recently parted ways with the woman I was seeing who was by far number one in terms of looks. This is the second time I’ve broken things off with the woman ranked number one in looks. Maybe it’s the same for men—we can’t compete on the strength of our wallets alone. A Losing Man

I’m Kazu, a male member. Both are important to me. Even if she’s attractive, I won’t make an offer if she has a bad personality.
