If he’s going to give me something anyway, he might feel better giving me a new smartphone as a gift.

When it comes to birthday or other gifts, I’d rather receive extra cash than something tangible, so I’d say yes right away to an amount like this.

Why not use that amount to look for appliances, clothes, or something else you want?
You could also consider repairs as one of the options…

I’ll answer too—Maezawa from the CEO’s office.
When I hear “a present,” I imagine giving someone an actual item, so when someone asks me to pay for their repair bill, I can’t help thinking, “That’s not quite the same…”
Maybe what would make you happiest is having your screen repaired, but in that case, I think you’d be happier if they said something like:
“My screen is cracked and hard to see, so I’d like a new iPhone, but they’re expensive, right? Don’t worry about it.”
That said, if the man replied, “iPhones are expensive, so would it be okay if I just paid for the screen repair?” then maybe things would work out the way you were hoping.
Come to think of it, a few years ago, every woman who came in for an interview had a cracked phone screen. I didn’t realize people still had cracked screens these days.
You’d think a shockproof phone case and screen protector would prevent screens from cracking that easily.

This is Joe.
That doesn’t make sense. If someone told me, “I’ll fix your cracked screen as a birthday present,” I wouldn’t be happy about it. I don’t want to do things for someone that I wouldn’t be happy to receive myself.
Besides, Joe’s phone screen isn’t even cracked.

I think it’s good. It’s unusual, but not weird.
