I’m Basil, a male member.
Before COVID, I went to izakayas a few times on second and subsequent dates, usually when it was already late at night, but never on a first date.
There’s a wide range of izakayas. If it’s a stylish one, I think a college student who isn’t used to upscale restaurants would be perfectly happy there.

For a first date, I’m perfectly happy having a meal at a hotel.
If we hit it off, I’m totally fine with going to Muten Kura Sushi next time.
It’s not all that different from a sushi restaurant with a counter.
Was it only available around Sakai City in Osaka?
To the owners of Kura Sushi: thank you as always for your continued support.
☆By the way, I’ve never been to an izakaya or bar in my life. I wanted to go to a burlesque show (tears).

The allowance for the first meeting may seem a little low, but from the second meeting onward, it wouldn’t be unusual to meet at an izakaya, depending on the woman.
I get the feeling that younger women generally don’t really prefer hotel restaurants.

I’m Flagmaker, a column writer.
I’m that “old guy.”
I’m all about the food, so I’ll even take someone on a date to a hormone grill, a grimy Thai restaurant, or a cramped, cluttered yakitori joint.
I get tired of eating nothing but fancy food. Food compatibility is extremely important to me. If I can’t be with someone I can relax around and say things like, “Wow, this is delicious,” or “Another draft beer!” even in places like that, I’ll eventually get bored.
That said, I’m a gentleman with good manners, so of course I’ll book a nice private room for the first date.
From the second date onward, I’ll discuss it with my date, and if she’s okay with it, we’ll occasionally go to places like those.
Having to add this kind of explanation at the end is such a pain, lol.

Back before there were anonymous question boxes, I sometimes received negative feedback like:
“I was disappointed because he took me to an izakaya even though it was our first date.”
“Going to a beer garden was a letdown.”
“It was a family restaurant.”
I wonder what it’s like these days.
I feel like everyone now makes more of an effort to take their dates to proper restaurants, though...
Come to think of it, I remember there was also a question in a question box along the lines of:
“He took me to Sushiro, even though...”
And the respondents reacted with, “Why Sushiro?”

Never, actually… I wonder why. Maybe my papas don’t like izakayas. We do go to ramen shops and casual set-meal restaurants, though.

Get plenty of offers yourself and see for yourself.
I’ve never been asked to go to an izakaya.
There have been times when I was the one to suggest going.
