I’m a woman. If I’m asked what I’d like for my birthday, is it okay to ask what the budget is—like how much they’re willing to spend?

I’m Aya, a female member. I adjust my approach depending on my relationship with the person—for example, whether he’s a papa (a male supporter) who prefers me to be reserved or one who wants me to be straightforward. But from the way you’ve described the situation, it seems like it would be fine to ask something like, “What’s your budget?”

I’m a male member named Basil. If a man asks what you want, it’s perfectly fine to ask about his budget in a cute way, like, “How much would be okay?” If he’s stingy or doesn’t have much money to spare, he’ll probably tell you upfront what he can afford and ask what you’d like within that range. It’s also fine to simply say what you want, but if you push it too far, there’s a risk he may see you as greedy. Personally, I’m generally not big on giving gifts. If someone asks for a birthday present, I might occasionally add an amount ranging from transportation expenses to one allowance payment on top of the allowance.

I’m Osaka, a male member. In that case, it’s fine to be specific—send them links to the things you want, for example. Depending on how they respond, it’s also okay to ask what their budget is. Just be considerate, too, and keep in mind the kind of budget that would make you feel comfortable relying on them during the course of the relationship.

I’m a male member, Paper Airplane. Why not start by asking for the thing you want most—the kind of gift you’d be happy to receive? In all my years, I’ve never been asked what my budget was... If it’s something I’ve been thinking about or wanting to buy for myself for a while, I’d probably be okay with it in most cases. But if it’s something I wouldn’t buy myself and don’t really want that much—something I might consider buying depending on the budget—it’s probably better not to mention it.

Maezawa from the CEO’s Office here. If he’s asking what you’d like for your birthday, I think it’s because he likes you too. If you’ve gotten close, there’s nothing wrong with asking about his budget. Of course, you could also start by naming something expensive, then gradually suggest cheaper options while gauging his reaction.
