I’m a fan of Japanese cuisine, but I’m struggling because Japanese restaurants in Tokyo are shockingly expensive. I don’t want to be stingy when I’m dining with a beautiful woman, but it can’t be helped. Does anyone know any good places?

I’m Saito, the columnist ♪ Recently, one of the female members took me to a Korean-style yakiniku restaurant, and I was amazed by how delicious it was. The bill was only around ¥6,000 for both of us, which really surprised me. “She really disliked the greasy food at upscale restaurants, so I wanted to bring her somewhere I usually go with my friends.” It made me realize that, with Japanese cuisine and everything else, expensive doesn’t necessarily mean delicious. Of course, some restaurants are truly in a league of their own, but I especially feel that way about sushi and yakiniku. You can either search around yourself, like Flag Maker does, or get recommendations from a woman you’ve had a long-term relationship with. Some of the female members earn money writing food reviews, so women like that are usually happy to arrange things for you—and I learn a lot from them too.

I’m Joe, a male member. Tokyo is generally expensive, isn’t it? I can accept it when the food is good, but unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Joe is temporarily based in Kyoto at the moment, and I’ve been surprised by how many reasonably priced, delicious Japanese restaurants there are. By the way, what kind of budget are you considering for a meal? For me, once the bill goes over ¥30,000 per person, the price starts to overshadow the experience. A well-known sushi restaurant would easily—and then some—go over that budget. Recently, I made an offer in Tokyo for the first time in a while and took her to a yakitori restaurant. Considering the location (Roppongi) and the atmosphere (a private room), I felt that ¥30,000 for two was quite reasonable. More importantly, the food was excellent. I’m not sure whether you would categorize yakitori as Japanese cuisine, but I hope this gives you a useful reference.

I’m Flag Maker, a columnist. I find good restaurants by exploring them myself. Tabelog ratings aren’t everything. I do know some reasonably priced, delicious Japanese restaurants, but I can’t share the information unless there’s something in it for me—whether that means a favor in return or payment.

I’m a male member who goes by Paper Airplane. Whether it’s an upscale restaurant or an inexpensive one, please remember that women may also appreciate being taken somewhere they genuinely find delicious. From a woman’s perspective, when a man has an unrefined palate, having to say that everything is delicious can be quite stressful. Ideally, you’d explore on your own and find great restaurants, but unless you’re genuinely interested in food, walking around to discover places isn’t realistic. So, as one reliable option: On Ikkyu, try searching by review rating and number of reviews. You’ll find quite a few restaurants rated 4.7, 4.8, or at least 4.5. I think the chances of being disappointed are fairly low, and there are also plenty of reasonably priced options. P.S. Rather than simply knowing good restaurants, I think having the palate to recognize what’s truly delicious is a far more valuable asset—and something women will appreciate.

I’m だて◎ゆめ, a male member. I haven’t been to Tokyo lately, but I did think it was expensive. Since the cost of living and salaries are higher there, restaurants have to charge more to stay in business(笑) That said, there were some cheaper places where you could quietly meet for a meal in a tucked-away corner of town(笑) It might be worth looking for a woman who’d be happy with that kind of place. I’m totally fine with having an offer turned down.

I’m Dai, a male member. Expensive restaurants aren’t necessarily delicious just because they’re high-end. There are plenty of places where you’re mainly paying for the location. If you try going to highly rated restaurants one after another on review sites, you can find some real hidden gems. My favorite kappo-style restaurant is a standing bar, so I don’t often take women there, but the food is exceptionally good.

I’m Nana Ayase ♡ Are you perhaps offering 30,000 yen for an adult relationship? If you think that’s too much to win over a beautiful woman, you won’t get anywhere.

I’m Kazu, a male member. If you search on sites like Gurunavi, you can find quite a few Japanese restaurants that have a nice atmosphere and great food without being surprisingly expensive. The place I went to recently was under ¥10,000 per person for dinner, and the woman I was with really enjoyed it too. However, the meal ended up lasting a little over two hours. Besides, don’t you already have a general idea of which areas in Tokyo you use? You should make the effort to find one yourself.
