Let’s assume it’s because he’s married.
If his wife demands compensation for the affair, the papa may end up having to pay even if you “didn’t know.” For your own sake, it’s probably best not to ask any further, as a way of avoiding potential risks.

If you think about it normally, it’s probably because he is married.
Try asking in a different way:
“If you’re married, this would be an affair, and if your wife found out, you could end up having to pay compensation.
But if you can assure me that you’re definitely not married, I might not have to pay compensation even if she finds out. So this is important to me—please answer.”
Something along those lines, perhaps.
Though if he’s not very perceptive, I’m not sure it’ll get through to him…
