I’d like my papa (a male supporter) to buy me a beauty appliance worth around ¥200,000. Do you think he’d get it for me if I asked, even though it’s not my birthday? We’ve been seeing each other for almost a year.

I’m Aya, a female member. Unless your papa (a male supporter) is completely smitten with you, it’s probably best not to ask for expensive gifts or favors. Wouldn’t it be less risky to wait a few months and save up ¥200,000 rather than ask for something worth ¥200,000 now and risk being dropped?

Buy it with your allowance. You’re already receiving more money than you could earn on your own, and being taken to places you could never afford yourself—so are you really going to ask for things you couldn’t buy either? People will think you’re shameless. When two people genuinely care about each other, gifts naturally go both ways. Whether I’m playing golf or just going about my daily life, I’ve realized that most of what I use was given to me as gifts. I’ve never asked for any of them. —Akari

I’m Flag Maker, a collaborative writer. All the women I’m seeing are pretty crafty—they never actually ask for anything. They just casually bring up something they want. Then I read the room and say, “I’ll get it for you next time.” Or rather, most of the time, I end up being maneuvered into saying it.

I’m in Seattle. If they’re my number-one or number-two, I’ll buy things for them without being asked. Someone who begs for things might drop in the rankings. Wouldn’t it be better to just get cash?

I’m Kamihikoki, a male member. Basically, it’s better not to ask for things. I think what matters is having a relationship where you receive things at the right time without having to ask. Besides, after nearly a year, you should be able to buy most things with your allowance. In a regular relationship, there’s no allowance, so the longer it lasts, the more inclined you are to give increasingly expensive gifts. But in an allowance-based relationship, since there’s already an allowance, gifts become less necessary over time. If anything, gifts may be more expensive in the early stages, when you both want to show that your feelings are genuine.

I’ll answer too—Maezawa from the president’s office. You should probably assume that asking for things is quite difficult. Men may think, “I’m already giving her an allowance all the time, and it’s still not enough?” and end up losing interest. Birthdays are a different story, though. Since giving presents on someone’s birthday is generally accepted, I think it’s fine to ask. Still, don’t be pushy—something light like, “I’m looking forward to my present,” is probably best. Even then, they may not buy you anything. So when there’s no special occasion, I’d suggest giving up on asking and saving it for their birthday. It’s also a good idea to make an effort to become someone they like in the lead-up to their birthday. For example, if you want beauty appliances, you could casually say, “I’d love to get a skincare treatment, but it’s so expensive that I can’t really go.” They might bring it up themselves without you even asking. There’s also a very small chance they might say, “Would you like me to buy you this beauty device?”

I’m Kazu, a male member. Some people are happy to buy gifts, while others will cut ties if they’re asked for one. I’ve voluntarily given gifts worth around ¥300,000, but if she had asked me for one, I probably would have ended things.
