When ordinary people save money, the basic approach is to cut back on unnecessary expenses down to the very last yen. As long as your income is limited, keeping your spending down is only natural. It’s not that there’s some deep darkness to it. It’s simply that Japanese people are generally brought up with that kind of mindset. Work hard and earn your money. Money earned without working is dirty. Don’t spend money on unnecessary things. And save for a rainy day. I believe that was the educational policy of Japan, so it seems like a very traditionally Japanese way of thinking. Of course, successful people are those who managed to step outside the bounds of that education, so they may see it as dark or oppressive. But most Japanese people never really break free from the values they were taught as children.
