Interesting question. I find Kazu’s estimate—that 10% of people in their 20s and 30s, or 1.28 million people, have experience with it—pretty convincing. Universe has around 7,000 members, if I remember correctly, and probably about the same number of new members join each year. Over 20 years for people in their 20s and 30s, that comes to 140,000 people, equivalent to a 10.9% share. Since there are also apps, it feels roughly in line with reality.
By the way, I also did some quick Googling on related industries:
- AV actresses: about 1 in 200 people across all age groups (0.5%), with over 150,000 in total
- The number of hostesses is around 1 million, and more than half of female university students have experience as one (50%+) (Seriously? lol)
- Virgins: 3.26 million people aged 18–39 (11% of those in their early 30s); male virgins: 3.8 million
- LGBT people: 10%
There seems to be quite a bit of overlap between hostesses, AV actresses, and papa-katsu, though. They seem to show up more frequently than those percentages would suggest—especially AV actresses. Or is that just me? lol

I googled “the papa-katsu population” and came across an article titled, “One in Ten Have Tried It: The Major Risks Hidden in papa-katsu.” According to a survey conducted by an online research company, based on responses from 334 women in their 20s and 30s across Japan, around 10% of women in both age groups are apparently involved in papa-katsu.
I wondered whether that could really be true, so I did the math. There are roughly 12.8 million women in their 20s and 30s in Japan. If 10% of them are involved, that’s 1.28 million women. Since Universe Club has around 7,000 members, that would mean roughly one in every 200 women involved in papa-katsu is registered with Universe Club. Somehow, that number feels about right to me.
I hope Universe Club will work hard to capture the remaining market of 1.27 million women.
