It was for the Green Car, and I was fine with the return trip, but I couldn’t help thinking, “I paid for the outbound trip myself, though…”

For offers involving long-distance travel, the man pays the actual transportation costs separately, so basically, you receive only what it actually cost.
If it’s ¥24,000, you receive ¥24,000.
If it’s ¥25,360, you receive ¥25,360.
To make a good impression, it’s even better to give the man the receipt, just in case. You might think rounding up is easier since dealing with odd amounts is a hassle, and in reality, I think most men would round up anyway. But if the woman is the one who quotes a rounded-up amount, the man will be disappointed.
So it leaves a better impression if you ask for the exact amount of the actual expense—and if you receive more than that, offer to give him the change.
For reference, on the first date, you are guaranteed to receive:
- The actual transportation cost (¥24,000 if that’s what it cost)
- The transportation allowance under the Universe rules (¥5,000–¥10,000)
If things then progress to an adult relationship (intimate), you should first confirm how much allowance you’ll receive separately, and then decide whether to proceed.
When a man comes from far away, he often assumes that the woman will almost certainly agree to an adult relationship (intimate), so it’s important to clearly communicate the allowance you want.
Be careful not to compromise on your terms. (Though this applies regardless of whether it’s a long-distance arrangement.)

Wouldn’t it be simplest to assume that if the allowance is ¥24,000, you’ll receive ¥24,000?
If you think that way, you’ll be happy if you receive more, whereas expecting more won’t benefit you in any way.
After all, ¥24,000 is a substantial amount of money.
