The reason is simple:
“I haven’t been able to see them lately because I’ve been busy.”
I think that’s the cause.
If the other person feels they don’t need to see you, it’s only natural for you to think, “Fine, then I’m done too.”
Saying you can’t meet because you’re busy actually means your feelings toward the other person have cooled off. That’s something anyone can easily understand.
Yet thinking that you’re somehow fine is self-centered.
Giving someone money doesn’t mean you’re the one in control. That’s a misconception.
Don’t forget that you’re equals.
In fact, there are times when it’s better to be humble and think, “They’re making the effort to meet me.”
If you did that, you probably wouldn’t be asking a question like, “Does this kind of thing happen?”
