Gentlemen, roughly how much cash do you carry in your wallet when you go on a date? Regardless of whether I’m going on a date, I usually carry around ¥200,000, plus a few ¥1,000 bills for paying taxis. I do have some coins, but when a taxi gives me too many coins in change and they’re too heavy, I often tell the driver to keep them. After what happened with the girl who took ¥10,000 every time, I’ve been wondering whether I should make my lifestyle as cashless as possible. After all, cash is only something they can take because I have it on me. Japan is likely to become less safe as more foreigners move in, and as I get older, I’ll become an easier target too. I’m Saito, a columnist♪ Since the allowance can sometimes be quite substantial, unless you’re a particularly famous celebrity, carrying around ¥1 million should be enough. Like Mac the taxi driver, I consider any change under ¥1,000 a tip, so I don’t carry coins. And, just like Mac, when I go out on a date, I travel light with only a few tens of thousands of yen, another few tens of thousands of yen, and a card.

I’m a male member named Seattle. I keep ¥200,000 in my wallet and top it up whenever it drops below ¥100,000. I use cashless payments and every Pay app, so I don’t need much cash. Most of the cash is for allowances for women I have ongoing arrangements with. Dealing with the tax office is a hassle, so I only pay in cash.
