Would it be risky if she seriously said, “It’s not that I want money. I’m fine either way about the allowance. I don’t have any mature men around me I can talk to, so I’m looking for someone like that”? I can’t help suspecting that she might be a bit emotionally unstable…

I’m Saito, a column writer♪. Money matters. Generally speaking, I think it’s better to accept what you’re offered. I can’t quite make a judgment based on this information alone, but if that’s how you feel overall, I think it’s fair to trust your instincts. The more deeply involved you become, the harder it can be to get out—and the more likely you are to get caught up in their problems.

I’m a confused man in my 60s. There are women like that. I once had a relationship with a woman who had just broken up with her boyfriend right before they were supposed to get married. She said she felt lonely and signed up, or rather, that she was looking for someone to talk to. The allowance wasn’t an issue. However, I was in a situation where I couldn’t afford for her to develop serious feelings for me, so I made sure she fully understood that before we started seeing each other. Once she had sorted out her feelings, our relationship became very close, but we parted on good terms. I still remember it fondly.

Maezawa here with an answer. I don’t think it’s particularly risky. If you’re fine either way regarding the allowance, I think you should give her a proper allowance and see how things develop. If you’re single and wouldn’t mind her genuinely falling for you, then there’s nothing wrong with pursuing a serious relationship without an allowance, either. Even if you’re suspicious at first, you can’t know the truth right away. You’ll gradually learn more as you spend time together, so if you like her, I think you should give it a try.
