I’m planning to sign up soon—I was referred by a friend. I don’t really have a specific reason for starting papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan); I just kind of felt like trying it. But I heard there’s a questionnaire asking why you started, and I’m not sure what to write. The men look at those answers before applying to meet you, right? What kind of girl would make you want to invite her out?

Thank you for your question! I’m Higashino, a staff member at Universe Club, and I’ll be answering you. If you only have a general idea, I think that’s perfectly fine! The staff will help bring out your natural charm♪ Creating a story tailored to what men want can be great if you can fully play the part, but I feel that anything insincere or fabricated will eventually come through to the man..! Rather than overthinking everything beforehand... For now, just tell us about yourself during the interview♪ We look forward to meeting you! Higashino

If your reason for doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) is simply “I don’t really have a particular reason,” then I think it’s fine to just write that. The pre-interview questionnaire is only that important, after all. You’ll be asked all sorts of questions during the interview, so how you respond there matters much more. If you give the impression that you don’t really care, the staff may think you’re not very fun to talk to. Then, when a man asks what kind of woman you are, they might say something like, “The conversation doesn’t really flow, but if she’s your type, I think she’d be a good match.” Women who understand this—and naturally cheerful women who always seem to be enjoying themselves—act that way in front of the staff too. The staff think, “If this woman is like this, men will probably feel the same way,” and may recommend them to clients. Of course, looks are important too. If a woman is exceptionally attractive, even if she’s a little standoffish, they may still say, “We don’t have anyone else with looks this impressive.” So, to sum up: for the questionnaire, it’s perfectly fine to write exactly what you think. But during the interview, it’s important not to let your guard down and to remember that the person you’re talking to could be the man you’ll be dating. They may even notice whether you lined up your shoes after taking them off. (Some locations don’t require you to take off your shoes.)

Rather than a questionnaire, they ask you questions, and your answers change the content of your profile. As for the kind of girl I’d want to do papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) with: Someone whose face I’m attracted to, with a classy, refined look; a figure I like—more curvy than slender; a weight roughly within ±5 kg of her height minus 110; someone who looks like she has a defined waist; kind-looking, with a cute smile and an honest personality; somewhat quiet; and someone who seems to enjoy sex. Those would probably be the main things.

A simple reason like “I was curious” is best. If you give a serious reason, it takes the fun out of it.

Answers that pander to men are gross, so I think it’s better to keep things vague.
