Lately, a lot of people have been telling me to work on my self-esteem and to love myself more. Why do you think that is? I dress pretty normally, though. Has anyone else been told the same thing?

Sometimes people who don’t understand the conversation or jokes say things like, “You should be more confident,” when all you’re doing is making self-deprecating or negative jokes. I just think, “Wow, you really can’t read the room.”

Maybe it’s not your appearance, but your personality and behavior—you worry too much, are overly considerate, put others before yourself, and are simply too kind?

No one has ever said that to me, but I have said it to a few people. I don’t think low self-esteem has anything to do with how you present yourself. I think the reason they say it is that, when trying to maintain their relationship with you, your low self-esteem gets in their way.
