I’m always too hesitant and can’t express my opinions to others—especially people I work with or men. I’m afraid they’ll dislike me. I hate myself for always trying to please people. What should I do? I’m genuinely struggling with this.

Take the attitude that it’s okay if people who don’t like you end up disliking you. You’ll meet other people you can get along with. Life is short. Rather than becoming someone you dislike, try to live in a way that lets you like yourself. You can’t easily change other people, but you can change the way you think starting right now. Don’t put yourself down. Sometimes, say no when you don’t like something, and I hope you enjoy your life.

I think it’s best to keep that approach until you’re 30 and use it to expand your network. After 30, narrow things down and spend time with people you genuinely click with, creating an environment where you can be yourself and say what you really think. It’s hard to change yourself overnight, so one option is to think of life in stages and make pragmatic choices strategically. The truth is, some connections and opportunities only come from pushing yourself a little.

I think all of those could also be seen as strengths. In fact, some of them may be wonderful strengths. It depends on the degree, but I don’t think there’s any need to be pessimistic. Personality and circumstances don’t change overnight, so are there any areas where you’re currently seeing positive results? If you’re achieving things at work or being recognized by those around you, I think that’s also something valuable and wonderful.

I think you lack confidence in yourself. You’re still in your early twenties, perhaps? Even if you win men over by flattering them, other women may just talk behind your back. So first, try to narrow the gap in how you treat men and women. Speak to women and men in the same way. Then, how about building your confidence by getting a qualification or finding a small hobby?
