I saw a 20-something man described as doing papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan). Is that actually a thing too?

I think it’s perfectly fine. If I’d had the financial means to join a dating club in my twenties, I might have switched careers to “Gambler” in Dragon Quest terms and done papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) too.

I think papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan) is perfect for men in their 20s who don’t want to get married but still want a female partner. When you date someone your own age in the usual way, you may worry, “I’d feel bad if I ended up taking away her chance to marry.” So my interpretation is that kinder guys choose allowance-based relationships without marriage as the goal. If you have no desire to get married, why not? For wealthy people, marriage is practically a punitive, disadvantageous institution. P.S. If I’d become rich in my twenties, I definitely wouldn’t have gotten married. Becoming wealthy in your twenties is rare and difficult.

I also had a woman I kept in a rented apartment when I was in my late 20s. Adding to its-me’s answer: > My interpretation is that, when kind men date someone their own age in the usual way, they may worry, “I’d feel bad if I took away her chance to marry,” so they turn to relationships with an allowance and no expectation of marriage. After a woman I was dating in my mid-20s—who had said she wasn’t looking to get married—started pressuring me to marry her, we broke up. After that, I wanted a partner without marriage being part of the deal, so I pursued relationships involving an allowance. It wasn’t because I was being kind. I simply wanted to avoid the hassle of someone showing up at my home without warning.

There are probably various patterns, but strictly speaking, someone your own age would be more like “friend-katsu,” someone slightly older than the woman would be “older-brother-katsu,” and someone old enough to be her parent would be papa-katsu, given the nature of the arrangement. Maybe they’re all broadly referred to as papa-katsu… Just as someone in their 50s can’t do things exactly like someone in their 20s, there are probably some things people in their 20s can’t do the way someone in their 50s can.
