I often have foreign papas (male supporters), and they all want to hold hands, but I really dislike it. I’d like to turn them down without offending them—how should I put it?

I think the best approach is to kindly but clearly say no when something makes you uncomfortable. In many foreign cultures, people feel that not saying what you really think is actually more rude, so foreigners may be more likely to accept your honesty. —It’s me

Thanks for the question. I’ll answer as Maezawa as well. I think Japanese and foreign cultures are different. If you can’t adapt to the other person’s culture, it may be better not to pursue the relationship in the first place. If you do want to be with them, I think it’s important to accept and respect their country’s culture and follow its customs to some extent. Ultimately, the choice is yours. Think about what matters most to you, and figuring out how to handle things shouldn’t be that difficult. If you’re only comfortable with Japanese culture, then it may be better to date a Japanese person.

I’m voting for Seattle! “I’d prefer to get to know you a little better first!” sounds good to me.

If you gradually distance yourself, you can avoid holding hands without making things awkward.

In Japan, people only hold hands when the moment really calls for it, so just smile and say, “Not yet—wait.” Only hold hands in private. I used to be an awkward, unpopular guy myself, so I understand wanting to hold hands. If he’s not a foreigner, he might just be a beginner papa.
