I’ve already made plans for an overseas trip with my papa, but as the date gets closer, I’m starting to dread it. Is there a good way to turn him down?

Why not try acting honestly, without being bound by conventional wisdom? If you have a talent for winning people over, you might be able to get away with it—but whatever you do to others will come back to you in exactly the same way someday. Be prepared for that. It’s me.

Be prepared for the relationship to end and to cover any cancellation fees, then maybe you should quit. If it’s making you depressed, you shouldn’t have accepted in the first place. I think you got carried away by the seats you normally can’t afford, the hotels you normally couldn’t stay at, and seeing yourself there—but that was naive.

That kind of thing happens sometimes, right? If you can cancel, then cancel. If you can’t, you might as well go together. I’m sure it’ll be a valuable experience for you going forward.

It’s only natural for a papa (a male supporter) who makes you feel that miserable to get rejected—that’s just the way things work… You’ll have no choice but to turn him down early by saying your grandfather is getting close to the end, or that there’s been a death in the family… That papa is awful too, but honestly, the person asking is also at fault for choosing someone like him. They’re both idiots. Neither of them has any dignity…

Be prepared to be the bad guy (which you actually are) and tell her that you’re feeling depressed about it. I think it would be better for both of you if you didn’t go. And you should cover the cancellation fee, too. Simple, right?

Thank you for your question. I’ll answer as well. The man has probably made various reservations and adjusted his work schedule. Saying you can’t go at this point would be inconsiderate. Even if you offer to cover the travel expenses for both of you, I don’t think that would fully make up for the inconvenience of rearranging his work schedule. In the first place, I think you should have given it proper consideration before casually saying yes. I don’t think there’s really a good way to turn him down.

I don’t think anything that convenient exists.

Don’t you ever consider that the man may have made various arrangements as well? Canceling when the date is just around the corner is beyond inconsiderate.
