I recently met a papa (a male supporter), and almost the entire time we spend together is taken up by the same bragging every time. He mainly talks about how wealthy and popular he is. He makes a big show of being rich and claims to know—or regularly visit—all kinds of luxury places, but he doesn’t actually do anything beyond the agreed allowance. What makes men talk about themselves like that constantly? And have any other women had similar experiences and found it exhausting to meet men like this?

What I always think about questions like this is that the person asking also bears some responsibility. There’s an age gap, and your private lives—such as work—aren’t really connected, so it’s only natural that you eventually run out of things to talk about. Are you making an effort to start conversations yourself? Since you’re receiving an allowance, instead of complaining about the man you’re seeing, try looking for topics to talk about in your everyday life.

They have a few stories that make everyone say, “Wow, that’s amazing!” Talking about them gives them a sense of superiority and makes them feel good. The unfortunate part is that they quickly forget whom they’ve already told, and since they only have a few stories in their repertoire, they soon go right back to the beginning. Whether you respond as if you’re hearing it for the first time every time, or point it out as It’s Me suggested, do whichever is less stressful for you. I think smiling and letting it go in one ear and out the other is the mature thing to do, but don’t force yourself. Marika

I don’t think this is a psychological issue. You’re probably better off understanding that men are just wired that way. Bragging about their exploits or talking themselves up to women 20 or 30 years younger is, embarrassingly, a very common male trait. If you still want to continue seeing this man, try telling him bluntly, “Women generally want to talk more than listen,” or, “I’ve heard that story before.” If he’s the kind of man who wants to improve himself, he’ll realize it and try to do better. —It’s me

Because he’s a shitty old man who doesn’t realize people dislike him for constantly bragging. Work hard, find a better papa (a male supporter), tell him to stop bragging all the time, and ask for an allowance increase.

Flaunting their wealth, wearing designer brands head to toe, thinking they’re popular (when they’re mistaken)... People who go out of their way to show off are usually the opposite, aren’t they? And the same goes for showing off an expensive car... Anyone can drive one if they take out a loan for it. If being with him is painful for you, say goodbye. If you think he’s only doing it for the allowance because he doesn’t get many offers, then you’ll just have to put up with that much. So, you know what you need to do now.

From a male perspective, he probably just wants to feel good hearing, “Wow, that’s amazing!” When it comes to you, he may simply think that he can talk about various things, have you listen, and leave it at that. With other women, he might not stop at bragging—he may say, “I’m a regular at ◯◯, that upscale restaurant. Want to go next week?” It doesn’t seem like he considers you someone important. You sound tired too… Why not end things and look for someone else who won’t wear you out so much?

I think it’s probably the same reason you feel like posting your complaints here. I’m not getting any allowance either, so could you at least make your posts entertaining?
