I have notifications and message previews turned on, so a tiny photo of his face is showing on my home screen....
I’m really not good with older guys’ selfies. Maybe this guy is technically an old man.
In daylight, you can see all the roughness in their skin, and if they send you a big smile, their teeth are dirty too.
What would be a safe reply?
Also, I hate the thought of opening the LINE chat and having his face suddenly fill the screen, so I don’t want to mark it as read. There’s no way to delete the image from the chat without marking it as read... right?
I’m suffering.

For people of that generation, it’s basically like posting on Facebook (though most people in their 20s these days probably don’t use Facebook much), so I think it’s fine to just send something like a “Like.”

I remember reading somewhere that if you switch to airplane mode before opening it, the other person won’t get a read receipt because you’re offline. If that method still works, you might be able to delete it without marking it as read—but you’d still end up seeing the image.
That said, I do wonder why you’re seeing someone whose photos you don’t even want to look at.
Not being able to tolerate even the brief moment it takes to delete it seems a little extreme.

Hmm… do these papas really think girls in their 20s are happy to receive photos of their faces?
Why do they do things like that? It’s almost less upsetting than it is just… painful to see.
You could block him, but if you want to continue seeing this papa, you could delete the unread message and say, “I accidentally deleted it. Also, photos take up too much data, so could you just tell me about it instead?”
Though, I mean, he probably has Wi-Fi…

I think that’s what the block feature is for—so you don’t have to see unpleasant messages like that.
Why not just block them? That removes the conversation, and you won’t have to reply either.

I don’t think you can delete the photo without marking the message as read. Oh, wait! You can delete the entire conversation from the chat screen without viewing it. Of course, that would delete all your previous messages too…
If it’s really that upsetting, why not just block them? I personally don’t want to block anyone, so I don’t.
If you want to reply, you probably can’t delete it without marking it as read… You either mark it as read and reply, or delete it without replying. Either is fine.
