The woman I’m seeing says she might be pregnant with my child and asked me what I think we should do. I told her I wanted to prioritize her wishes, but she hasn’t told me anything. Should I give her money for an abortion, acknowledge the child, or get married? How would you handle this?

You should confirm whether she’s actually pregnant, but I think saying something like, “Are you sure it’s really my baby?” is out of bounds. Of course, I agree that this is something that should ideally be confirmed. But if you had unprotected sex, I think you need to take responsibility. If you didn’t want that possibility, you shouldn’t have had unprotected sex in the first place. > I told her I wanted to prioritize what she wanted. What exactly do you mean by that? I think you should talk it through with her more carefully and sincerely. Saying that you want to prioritize her wishes might be difficult for her to understand.

I think it would be best to have her take a pregnancy test in front of you… After that, please take responsibility and think carefully about how to handle the situation going forward. m(*_ _)m I don’t think having sex without protection is a good idea. If you’ve both agreed to do this as part of a casual relationship, then at the very least: 1. The woman should take her birth-control pills properly. 2. The man should pay for the pills and make sure she’s taking them. 3. Neither of you should be intimate with anyone else. Regarding point 2, since her taking contraception would be a condition of him paying for it, maybe this situation could have been avoided. (>_<) Anyway, if the test is positive even when she takes it in front of you, I think you should do whatever you feel is right. If you want the child and want her to have it, be sure to legally acknowledge paternity. There’s also the question of whether the child is really yours, though. (^_^;)

Putting aside the sheer stupidity of having unprotected sex with a papa-katsu partner, Joe-san is right about what should be done. I also think saying, “I’ll leave it up to you” is irresponsible and one of the worst things you can say—basically forcing the woman to bear all the responsibility for deciding whether to have the baby or not. Not stating your own opinion is cowardly. And as for the money, you should give her at least as much as Mac-san or Seattle-san. I can’t believe anyone would be so careless as to have unprotected sex without even knowing what they’d do if she got pregnant. What an idiot. Well, she’s partly to blame too. If she didn’t want to get married but did want a child, then I suppose she got exactly what she wanted. Marika

As everyone else has said, you also need to confirm the facts: Is she really pregnant, and is it really the questioner’s child? After that, tell her what you want. Whatever you choose, Joe—currently obsessed with Aristotle—thinks that’s what taking responsibility means. The worst part is not realizing how irresponsible it is to say, “I want to prioritize what you want.” Aristotle would have chewed you out: “Don’t go saying things that sound like Plato!” Good thing you’re Joe.

Shouldn’t you first meet in person, confirm the facts, and talk things over?

If you say you want to have my child and let me see them, I’ll give you ¥5 million a year—¥100 million over 20 years. If you decide not to have the child, then maybe ¥2 million as an apology.

What’s the point of asking complete strangers here? Besides, you only said you “might have done it.” Talk it over with the person involved.
