Prices are rising due to inflation—shouldn’t allowances go up too? Shouldn’t a “go-en” be 60,000 yen now?

Your allowance goes up because you’re worth that much. Are your looks, figure, intelligence, and personality really perfect?

Isn’t inflation precisely why companies would cut expenses unrelated to their business performance?

I don’t think prices have risen enough yet to really call it inflation. And during inflation, the prices of goods often rise before wages do, so people usually end up struggling. The ideal situation would be inflation driven by wages rising first, but given that the government isn’t properly raising the minimum wage, that seems difficult. People talk about Japan’s “lost 20 or 30 years,” but I feel things might not have turned out this way if the minimum wage had been raised properly. Honestly, I feel the minimum wage could—and perhaps should—have exceeded ¥2,000 an hour by now, judging from wage trends around the world.

Even with inflation, stores like Gyomu Super and Mercari remain popular because plenty of people are still looking for bargains. There’s supply and demand in the world, so it’s pretty difficult to suddenly raise allowances across the board. Wages at regular companies haven’t been rising much either, right? If you want to use the term “inflation,” it’s better to raise your value in the eyes of the papas you see—create inflation for yourself, so to speak—and get your allowance increased. You may have wondered, “Why did that papa give me so much money?” It’s because, in his eyes, your value had skyrocketed. That’s what you should aim for.
