Will the women who gave me Valentine’s chocolates cut me off if I don’t give them anything in return on White Day? I thought the chocolates were just a small gesture, but people seem to be making a huge fuss about it on the Q&A site...

Rather than making a big fuss, this is pretty much how things always are when there’s an event. It’s quite something to accept a gift and not give anything in return. Can you really call that gentlemanly behavior in the first place?

Rather than being cut off, if he’s someone you don’t feel like giving anything back to, there’s no point in staying involved with him.

I’ve received one before, but there have also been times when I didn’t. I’m not really the type to expect anything in return—I’d hate for someone to think I gave them chocolate or a gift expecting something back… Besides, I already receive a generous allowance every month, so I see it as having bought the Valentine’s chocolate with that money. I don’t need anything in return. That said, I wouldn’t say most women think this way, so it’s probably safest to give her something back.

It’s probably safest to reply that it’s simply papa-katsu etiquette. Considering the allowance, that’s pretty cheap.

If you’re seeing someone who gives gifts expecting something in return, they might cut ties with you. But normally, gifts are given as a gesture, so I think a simple thank-you should be enough. That said, isn’t White Day the perfect opportunity to show your appreciation? So I’d say giving a small token in return is probably the safest option.

Rather than asking on a Q&A site, you should take action first. Don’t overthink it— just be honest with yourself.

If someone cuts you off just because you didn’t return the favor for the chocolate, I guess that tells you how little they valued the relationship. If I receive something, I do return the favor, though.

I think you should give something in return, even if it’s just a small token of appreciation. I didn’t get to meet anyone today, so I didn’t give out any chocolate, though… I did receive some from a woman at work (lol). Marika

I think it’s just a small token of appreciation. Still, if you receive something, I feel you should return the favor.
