I’ve been reading the Asahi Shimbun, a local newspaper, and The Japan Times since I was in elementary school—not because I had to, but simply because I enjoyed them.
Reading the printed word, deciding for myself what to take from it, and using it to pursue the things I wanted to learn was very helpful.
I think my curiosity and desire to learn were also part of why older people and seniors appreciated me and took me under their wing.
I think your desire to keep the conversation going shows respect and kindness toward the other person, so I think it’s wonderful.

Since I started university, I’ve somehow kept up with the online editions of the Nikkei, Asahi, and Yomiuri every day. But rather than being useful for papa-katsu (compensated dating in Japan), I’d say I simply enjoyed satisfying my curiosity and expanding my knowledge…
Newspapers are basically like headlines—they’re there to help you find things that interest you and then dig deeper. In practice, I think you build your knowledge by reading books and studying subjects in depth through university lectures.
I also loved the culture sections on weekends. They made it easy to discover books I wanted to read, and they were packed with interviews and columns by intellectuals.
It’s not that this attitude directly helped me with anything in particular. It’s more that Japanese companies really like people who have read newspapers for years and studied diligently.
I feel that it also appealed to papas (male supporters) in papa-katsu who prefer serious, studious women.
But reading the Nikkei doesn’t automatically get you a generous (well-paying) papa. What happens after that depends on the individual.

I do think you need to read it if you’re going to trade forex or stocks, though.
But lately work has been so busy that I just go straight to bed when I get home, and I want to sleep until the very last minute in the morning. I’m starting to feel a bit worn out.
That’s the excuse I came up with.

I’m not particularly clever, so I don’t have conversations like that. I think the most important thing is for both of us to enjoy the time together. However, if I met someone who enjoyed those kinds of conversations, I’d probably study hard to keep up.
So I should start now, shouldn’t I? Yes… Thank you for your question. Starting today, I’ll try to gradually broaden my knowledge—not necessarily by reading the newspaper, but so I can keep up with any kind of conversation!

I think it’s better to read something than nothing at all.
Newspaper articles only cover the surface, so be careful—bringing up a topic that switches your papa on could end up backfiring on you.

I don’t think it’s a bad habit, but I get the impression that the Nikkei is too boring for Joe.
The Asahi Junior and Senior High School Students’ Newspaper is published only on Sundays. Since quite a few of our papas’ children are probably in junior or senior high school, this might be a better choice than the Nikkei. It’s cheaper, too（笑).

I don’t talk about economics or politics on dates.
A papa’s job is to figure out what topics a woman is interested in, pick up on them, and keep the conversation going.
Also, isn’t the Nikkei kind of difficult? I was honestly pretty clueless, so I couldn’t understand it at all in my early twenties. When I was trying to figure out what I needed to do to start a business and ended up thinking, “I’ll just get an MBA!” I started taking accounting and finance classes, and that’s when I finally became able to read the Nikkei.
Those were the days.

It might be helpful to keep reading, but there are occasional mistakes, so I wouldn’t take everything at face value.

It doesn’t have to be the Nikkei, but I do think it’s a good idea to read the newspaper.
Start by reading just the headlines. For any articles that interest you, try reading the full story as well.
If you don’t quite understand what something means, ask your papa (a male supporter) about it. Some of them will be happy to explain it proudly.
It’s a good way to come up with conversation topics.
