Everyone has their own darkness.
Life isn’t something you can simply reduce to black and white.
My regulars often come to me on their own to talk about all kinds of things—their siblings, their parents, chronic illnesses, and so on. I feel like there’s less and less I don’t know about them as the days go by.
That’s how we gradually grow closer, build trust, and come to rely on each other. The allowance naturally goes up as well.
That said, I never ask about these things myself.

It probably depends on what was said before and after, but I think it was likely just something along the lines of:
“We’ve gotten closer, so tell me all about yourself.”
Maybe another woman suddenly told him, “I can’t do this with you anymore,” and he realized he should make a point of asking about things more regularly.
